All my icons for this account are from the "Two Lumps" cartoons featuring "Ebeneezer" and "Snooch". If you check my Icons page, each icon's descriptive info includes a link to the specific webcomic from which I got it... but if you haven't read "Two Lumps" at all, I recommend reading them in order.
As for not really knowing SPN, well, if one's in fandom and spending a lot of time reading fanfic and fannish lists/LJs, you can't help but pick up the basics. Without ever seeing an episode, I know that the lead characters are a pair of demon-hunting orphaned brothers, that the whump-bait one sold his soul to save his brother a season or two ago, that they're both hotties, that one of the actors also had an important recurring part in "Dark Angel", and that it's filmed in the Vancouver BC area (saw an ep being filmed in a diner in n.Van one summer when I was in town for a "Stargate" con, after I and friends had driven over to do "locations-spotting" for SG1 sites including "Jack's fishing cabin"). One doesn't REALLY need to know more than that to read and enjoy your story, since you include enough allusions to the "canon" back-story that the uninitiated can still follow your overall plot. About the only place I might be missing things is if your characterization's "off" for the SPN characters, but since you've got the characters I know well-written, I'm guessing it's the same for Sam and Dean.
A number of the fanfic authors I read in other fandoms also write SPN (and sometimes crossovers), which is one way I find new fandoms... I got hooked on "Sentinel" fandom after reading fic and before I'd ever seen an episode, for instance. I think, had I started out watching the show (with all its various flaws), I might not have given it a chance, but because I was introduced to the characters via a writer who loved 'em, I was a lot more forgiving of plot holes and the dreaded "Bimbo Of The Week".
I'm familiar enough with SPN fandom to already have preferences (no "Wincest", unless it's an AU where the "brothers" aren't really siblings), and watching the Season 1 DVDs is high on my "to-do" list for the New Year... :-)
